Salt Spray Test Apparatus

Description

Caltech India manufactures salt spray testing instrument. Salt spray test is also called as Fog Test. This is an accelerated environmental corrosion test in which metal specimens are exposed either continuously or intermittently to a fine mist of salt-water solution used to evaluate the resistance to corrosion of paints, coatings, or electrical connections. The appearance of corrosion products (oxides) is evaluated after a period of time. Test duration depends of the corrosion resistance of the coating; the more corrosion resistant the coating is, the longer the period in testing without showing signs of corrosion.

In the salt spray test cabinet painted / coated panels, automobile components i.e Electro-plated, Painted, and Anodized etc are exposed to a mist of salt over a period of test duration. Saturated air produced by spraying common salt solution into an enclosed cabinet creates humid atmosphere upto 98%. The articles being positioned for this accelerated corrosion test in such a way that they are exposed to the hot mist produced in the chamber, through the controlled air and liquid nozzles. The instrument is suitable for testing as per IS /BS / ASTM standards. Testing is carried out at 35 deg cent. Or even upto 50 deg cent.

Typical coatings that can be evaluated with this method are

Hot-dip galvanized steel, Phosphated surfaces, zinc and zinc-alloy plating, electroplating or Electroplated materials of chromium, nickel, copper, tin alloys, Coatings not applied electrolytically, such as zinc flake coatings acc. to ISO 10683, Organic coatings etc.

Neutral Salt Spray or Fog Test (ASTM B117), The acetic acid salt spray (Fog) test (ASTM G85, Annex A1) describes the detailed procedures.
